Why does this 'Massive' carrot has to come out. New to gardening 'heads up'
Why does this Massive carrot have to come out? Because its 'bolted', its 'run to seed' it's not going to produce a carrot. Left to grow on at the rate its growing it will soon be a lot taller and dominate the space available to the carrots adjacent to it. It can be left to 'grow on' and it may produce some viable seed but my choice is to remove it from the bucket to give the remaining carrots more room to develop.
If you like carrot reveals check out the 5 videos linked in the text below. This year is not looking great for carrots but when it is these are the results you can get from a small bucket of carrots.

Grow Potatoes and Apples on the same plant, you're kidding me.
Переглядів 7604 години тому
Grow Potatoes and Apples on the same plant, you're kidding me! When a small lightweight Ex cut flower water bucket with a Potato plant growing in it, changes shape from round to oval, the likely cause are the potatoes developing in it pushing it out of shape. If that's the case, we know we've got potatoes but what we don't know is how many, how big or how heavy. Time to find out. More stuff on ...

Grow BIG Potatoes in small buckets. Will this potato 'stick to the rules' ? Let's find out.

As a rule when you harvest potatoes the more stems above soil the more potatoes but smaller. The fewer stems above soil the fewer potatoes but bigger. Can you grow big potatoes in small buckets? This potato has just the one stem above soil. Let's see if it sticks to the rule.

Spring Rain, Watering early potatoes in Buckets

In our first spring month my buckets of vegetables were standing in my greenhouse avoiding any late frost but also not catching any rain that fell. How to grow lots of different varieties of tomato in a small greenhouse

In my small greenhouse I am hoping to grow a big selection of tomatoes. I purchased a seed pouch that had ten named varieties in it and I want to try to grow at least one of each. I've managed to germinate some of each variety and having grown them on indoors in Yogurt pots, I've now moved them up into fabric bags and out into my greenhouse. Some of these varieties I've grown before and some I ...

I've only ever had 1 Carrot bolt. We keep an eye out for any anomalies and nip them in the bud, so to speak. Carrots are a biennial plant, same root tried to be grown a second year. And they are cold hardy, so I wonder, what caused it? Plant the seed, it germinates, you then have a stretch of colder than normal temps, then warms up again, and the plant thinks it's just come out of dormancy. Who knows what Mother Nature has in store for us. Great advise for the newbies Jim.

Tip. Look along your row of carrots. The tallest carrots in the row are the ones most likely to have bolted. If its starting to thicken at soil level its starting to throw up a seed head and needs a thick stem to support it. There will be no edible carrot.

I have two greenhouses, both was glass but as I live in a flat & share a communal garden, I had to replace the glass with Polycarbonate sheets, 4mm size which I purchased from a company on EBay. It was pretty reasonably priced & came with a 10 year guarantee. I'm in my fourth year now & my panels are still in good condition. But rather than just clipping them in with glazing wire clips I put eight good size blobs of clear Mastic on each sheet then pressed them on firmly & put the clips on the tops. My panels won't blow off & they have withstood all the winds we have had in recent years. 😉

I had a couple of buckets of early potatoes(should have gone 90 days) but the heat was a bit too much for them. Small haul, but they didn't go to waste, as the wife made new potatoes and gravy. The others are still in buckets and not quite there yet, though they have flowered. Replanted those two buckets with Mizuna and Chinese White Celery. My Red Sun Shallots and Dutch Red Shallots are nearing the end of their growing cycle and 3-4" across. I'll be replanting those pots, too. It might be a good growing season this year! Take care, Jim!

Hello Greg. It's surprising how hot black buckets can get in full sun, probably too hot for root vegetables, potatoes in particular. It amazes me how some gardener in hot desert climates manage to grow anything at all in buckets. Must over heat and 'dry out' very quickly? Jim.

I'm trying spring onions the way they grow them in Asia. They cut the green tops off, and then using scissor, cut the tops into half inch (1cm) lengths ready to be fried as a base for most of their recipes. The grow back rate is quite astonishing, and the bulb can increase in size to a point where you could decide to eat that as well. Your 30 carrots idea far surpasses sowing seed willy nilly as well. Cheers from chilly South Australia.

This year has our usual 15 buckets of Red Chief earlies on the patio. Stagger planted so, dump a bucket as needed all summer. We have 1 Cauliflower plant each 3gal bucket, 4 now, again stagger planted, and 6 more just germinated for a steady fresh supply. 2 pepper plants in 3gal buckets that were wintered over from last year. Lastly, 4, 10gal buckets with 1 tomato plant in each. Now, if we can just get the weather to cooperate, we should have a good year. Last couple of days, high 90's, today 101 degrees. Then a thunderstorm. Temp dropped 20 degrees in 15 minutes. Low temps high 70's at night. The plants were drooping so bad it looked like we were growing baked potatoes. 😩

I had the soil in my raised beds tested, and the folks at the lab said to improve my PH that I should use ammonium sulfate for fertilizer instead of digging in compost as I usually do. I must say that the results have been good: I had my second harvest of green beans today and while the plants are smallish the plants are seriously loaded with beans. Tonight we will have about a quart full of perfect green beans. And, looking at the little beans I would say that it looks like I will need to pick again in only 3 days time. good soil = good yields! And the compost went to the potato patch, which actually needed it

For the most part, right on the money. More chits more potatoes. This was done with earlies, so that might make a difference, don't know. The weird thing though, the 1 stem buckets,,,,,,,,,, 3 of them had 4 equally sized potatoes almost exactly. 1.5lbs per bucket. 1 of the 4 chit buckets had about 20 marbles.
